The New Lieutenant of the Guard Lieutenant Altsomn Stmarken is assigned to command the Guard of the Concubine Pavilion in the service of Granspad Urel-Salem, king of Oriena. But what are his secrets? — — — Upon arriving at the Royal Palace, Altsomn carried two secrets: one hidden in his suitcase, the other in his heart and mind. After stepping out of the carriage, suitcase in hand, he approached one of the two guards at the gate, while with his right hand he pulled a document from one of his inside pockets. “Lieutenant Altsomn Stmarken,” he said, extending the document. The red wax seal bearing the insignia of the Royal Military Institute of Science and Research gleamed in the dawn light. “Reporting for command of the Concubine Pavilion Guard by His Majesty’s orders.” Seeing the document, the guard saluted Altsomn and then took the paper.    Nueva oficina a un precio increíble. ¿Qué podría salir mal? — — — La oficina estaba en el segundo piso; el propietario vivía en el primero. A mitad del camino de cemento que conectaba la casa con la vereda comenzaba la escalera que llevaba a mi nuevo lugar de trabajo. El propietario no sonrió al hacerme pasar a su sala. Su ceño estaba relajado y su mirada sugería que tenía prisa. Su precio era mucho más bajo que el de los demás. —Más te vale que te quedes aquí buen tiempo —bromeó—. Los inquilinos anteriores no duraron mucho. El primero se quedó tres semanas y luego pagó voluntariamente la penalización por rescindir el contrato; en cuanto al segundo, lo busqué dos meses después y no lo encontré. Pero yo estaba más enfocado en el precio que en los antecedentes, así que simplemente firmé, pagué el depósito y recibí las llaves. Cuando subimos, me dejó abrir la puerta.  New office rented at an incredibly good price. What could go wrong? — — — The office was on the second floor; the landlord lived on the first. Halfway along the concrete path that connected the house to the sidewalk, the staircase to my new workspace began. The landlord did not smile as he let me in. His brow was relaxed, and his gaze suggested he was in a hurry. His price was much lower than the others’. “You’d better stay here for a while,” he joked. “The previous tenants didn’t last long. The first stayed three weeks and then willingly paid the penalty for breaking the lease; as for the second, I looked for him two months later and couldn’t find him.” But I was more focused on the price than on the background. So I simply signed, paid the deposit, and received the keys. When we went upstairs, he let me open the door. The space was deeper than it had appeared from outside, or even from the first floor.
